The original practice in Dumbarton Street, Cape Town was started in 1950 by radiology pioneers, Dr CJB Muller and Dr JA Beyers. They later followed each other as the first two heads of the Department of Radiology at the University of Stellenbosch.
During these formative years a single x-ray machine was used for general x-rays, IVPs and linear tomography. This was indeed the Dark Ages. Dark rooms, wet hanger development, drying cabinets and tired radiologists, viewing wet films, delivered during the afternoon (when both patient and doctor had gone home), was the normal daily routine. |
